Football As Never Before - Film with live music score

Tuesday, November 1, 2016

Tuesday 1st Nov, 8.20pm

Film (105mins, Dir. Hellmuth Costard) with live music soundtrack

This 1971 portrait of Man U legend George Best trains multiple cameras on the revered footballer over the complete course of a match against Coventry City in 1970.

Presented with a live music soundtrack performed by Matthew Nolan (guitar/synths) , David Stalling (keys/lap steel guitar), Seán Mac Erlaine (clarinets/electronics), Bryan O’Connell (percussion) and Kevin Murphy (cello), Football as Never Before offers a chance to relive the unique talent of the greatest footballer this island is ever likely to produce, in his own back yard.  The score is minimalist and references progressive and post-rock music.

Made at the height of Best’s fame and tabloid notoriety, Costard’s film focuses insistently on Best—warming up, looking restless and bored, waiting tactically to unleash his genius—rather than the on-pitch action to arrive at a sublime and revealing rumination on celebrity and a tantalizing glimpse of the man behind the myth. The project was premiered at Visual, Carlow in November 2015 and this is the first showing in Northern Ireland.
